Our family mourns the loss of our beloved Barbara O’Neill, who passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, December 19th. Her final day was spent surrounded by love and the warmth of family, marking the end of a truly remarkable life. Born in 1941, Barbara came into the world during World War II, known as a “War Baby” while her father served as a Merchant Marine, protecting Boston Harbor from potential submarine threats. Her story is one of resilience, strength, and deep love for family a life that continues to inspire all who knew her.
Breaking Stereotypes in the Workforce
In a time when society often restricted women to certain roles, Barbara courageously broke through gender stereotypes. As a mother committed to providing for her family, she took on physically demanding jobs, undeterred by expectations in the 1970s and 1980s that discouraged women from doing manual labor. She worked as a roofer, tackling tar and gravel roofs, and later joined Local 223 in Boston as a union laborer.
Her dedication eventually led her to the Braintree Electric Light Department, where she worked as a custodian. Barbara didn’t just hold these positions; she thrived in them, earning the respect of her male colleagues through her unyielding determination and exceptional work ethic.
Her strength and perseverance became legendary among those who knew her. In each role, Barbara demanded respect not through words, but through her hard work and integrity. She showed that a woman could break barriers, earn her place, and make an impact in fields traditionally dominated by men. Her resilience in the workplace stood as an example for many, inspiring future generations to pursue their goals without fear.

Their lives were filled with joy and simple pleasures boating on the water, fishing for stripers, and playful moments with their Newfoundland dog. Together, they created memories that would last a lifetime, often spending hours by the shore, embracing the natural beauty of the world around them. Jack and Barbara’s deep affection was evident to everyone who saw them, their teasing and laughter a testament to a life well-lived in each other’s company.
As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara’s love knew no bounds. She cherished her family and was immensely proud of each member, supporting them through life’s many challenges. Her children and grandchildren describe her as a source of strength and guidance, her wisdom and warmth always available to those she loved. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she left an indelible mark on their hearts.
